I took photos for my news articles as a journalist, but I couldn't call myself a photographer. I spent part of this summer working to take better photos using my mid-grade Nikon. You are correct: gear isn't everything. I am also a martial arts/defensive tactics instructor. I tell my students often that training and no weapon are better than a weapon and no training. And a well-trained musician can make a pawnshop guitar sound expensive.
