Beautiful exposé of an issue many of us never think about. I am an adoptive father of two children who look nothing like me. My daughter is Chinese and my son is Hungarian Roma. When people see me out with my daughter, we get a few stares and often have the question, “Is her mother Asian?” My daughter has come home from school with questions about where she fits in. She looks Chinese, but doesn’t speak Chinese. She can’t really associate with the other Asian kids who come from Asian families, and sometimes the white kids don’t understand her situation. Most of her close friends are mixed (Mexican/White and Japanese/White). The issue you laid out is definitely one we should all pay closer attention to. Thanks for writing.
